Könskopplade, which translates to "sex-linked" in English, refers to traits or conditions that are genetically determined by genes located on the sex chromosomes, typically the X and Y chromosomes. In humans and many other species, females have two X chromosomes (XX), while males have one X and one Y chromosome (XY).

Because males have only one X chromosome, they express any gene present on that chromosome, whether it is dominant or recessive. Females, with two X chromosomes, have two copies of each gene on the X chromosome. This means that a recessive trait can be masked by a dominant gene on the other X chromosome in females.

This difference in sex chromosome composition leads to a higher prevalence of certain genetic conditions in one sex over the other. For example, X-linked recessive disorders, such as hemophilia and red-green color blindness, are much more common in males than in females. A female would need to inherit two copies of the recessive allele to be affected, whereas a male only needs to inherit one copy from his mother.

Conversely, conditions caused by genes on the Y chromosome are almost exclusively found in males, as females do not possess a Y chromosome. While less common, some X-linked dominant conditions can affect females more frequently or severely than males.
