It can also express a present or future possibility: Das könnte teuer sein. For polite requests, könntest du mir helfen? or Könnte ich bitte fragen, wie spät es ist? The mood softens statements and makes them less assertive than the indicative form.

In grammar, Konjunktiv II often contrasts with Konjunktiv I, which is used in indirect speech. The standard indirect-speech form of können is könne (e.g., Er sagte, er könne heute kommen). In everyday speech, however, können forms such as könnte are commonly used to express possibility or uncertainty in reported content as well.

Könnte is distinct from the simple past form konnte, which is the Präteritum of können used to talk about past ability or past possibilities in a factual sense.
