Köhögéssel is the Hungarian word for coughing. Coughing is a reflex action that helps clear the airways of irritants, mucus, or foreign particles. It is a common symptom of many different conditions, ranging from mild and temporary to severe and chronic.

The act of coughing involves a forceful expulsion of air from the lungs. This is typically initiated by a deep inhalation, followed by the closure of the glottis (the opening between the vocal cords). The abdominal and chest muscles then contract, increasing the pressure within the lungs. Finally, the glottis opens suddenly, allowing the air to rush out at high speed, carrying with it any substances that were obstructing the airways.

Allergies, asthma, and irritants like smoke, dust, or pollution can also trigger coughing. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), where stomach acid irritates the esophagus, can also lead to a chronic cough. In some cases, persistent coughing can be a symptom of more serious underlying conditions, necessitating medical evaluation. The treatment for köhögéssel depends on its underlying cause.
