Kõrvavalud, or earaches, are a common ailment characterized by pain in the ear. The pain can range from mild to severe and may be intermittent or constant. While often associated with infections, earaches can stem from a variety of causes, affecting individuals of all ages, though children are particularly susceptible.

The most frequent cause of earache is otitis media, an infection of the middle ear, often following a cold or upper respiratory infection. This can lead to fluid buildup behind the eardrum, causing pressure and pain. Other causes include otitis externa, also known as swimmer's ear, which is an infection of the ear canal. Earwax impaction can also generate discomfort and pain by blocking the ear canal and putting pressure on the eardrum.

Less common causes include temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, where pain from the jaw joint can radiate to the ear. Eardrum perforation, often due to injury or infection, can also result in ear pain. Additionally, changes in air pressure, such as during airplane travel or diving, can cause barotrauma, leading to ear pain.

Symptoms accompanying earaches can include fever, hearing loss, dizziness, and a feeling of fullness in the ear. Prompt medical evaluation is recommended, especially for severe pain, persistent symptoms, or if accompanied by high fever or drainage from the ear. Treatment typically depends on the underlying cause and may involve pain relievers, antibiotics for infections, or ear drops.
