Kõrvavalud, medically known as otalgia, refer to pain felt in or around the ear. This discomfort can range from mild to severe and may be intermittent or constant. While often associated with the ear itself, ear pain can also be referred pain originating from other areas.

The most common cause of otalgia in children is acute otitis media, an infection of the middle ear. This is frequently preceded by an upper respiratory infection. In adults, otitis media can also occur, though other causes become more prevalent. These include external otitis, often called swimmer's ear, which is an infection of the ear canal. Earwax impaction can also lead to significant pain and a feeling of fullness.

Referred pain is another important consideration. Conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), such as TMJ dysfunction or arthritis, can cause pain that is perceived in the ear. Dental problems, including tooth decay, abscesses, or impacted wisdom teeth, are also common sources of referred ear pain. Furthermore, throat infections like tonsillitis or pharyngitis, and even certain neurological conditions, can manifest as ear discomfort.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical history and physical examination, including an otoscopic examination of the ear canal and eardrum. Depending on the suspected cause, further investigations like dental or throat examinations may be necessary. Treatment strategies vary widely and are tailored to the underlying cause, ranging from pain relievers and topical drops for infections to addressing dental issues or managing TMJ disorders.
