Képstabilizáció, often abbreviated as IS or VR (Vibration Reduction), is a technology used in cameras and lenses to reduce the blur caused by camera shake. When a photographer holds a camera, even slight hand movements can translate into noticeable blur in the final image, especially at longer focal lengths or slower shutter speeds. Image stabilization systems counteract these movements.

There are two primary types of image stabilization. The first is optical image stabilization (OIS), where elements within the lens or sensor shift to compensate for camera movement. This is the most common type found in many DSLR and mirrorless camera lenses. The second type is digital image stabilization (DIS), which uses software algorithms to analyze and correct for camera shake. This can be done in-camera or during post-processing. Some systems combine both optical and digital stabilization for enhanced effectiveness.

The benefit of image stabilization is the ability to use slower shutter speeds without introducing blur, allowing for better performance in low-light conditions or when a shallow depth of field is desired without resorting to higher ISO settings, which can introduce noise. This technology is particularly useful for handheld photography and videography, making it a valuable feature for both amateur and professional users. The effectiveness is often measured in stops of stabilization, indicating how much slower a shutter speed can be used compared to without stabilization.
