Käynnistystoimintosarja, often translated as boot sequence or boot process, refers to the series of steps a computer performs when it is powered on until the operating system is fully loaded and ready for user interaction. This process begins the moment the power button is pressed and involves a chain of events to initialize hardware and load software.

The initial stage of the käynnistystoimintosarja is handled by the firmware, typically the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) or UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface). Upon power-up, the processor executes instructions from a specific memory address that points to the firmware. The firmware then performs a Power-On Self-Test (POST) to check the essential hardware components like the CPU, RAM, and graphics card.

Following a successful POST, the firmware searches for a bootable device, such as a hard drive, SSD, USB drive, or network interface, according to a predefined boot order. Once a bootable device is found, the firmware loads a small program called the boot loader from that device into memory. The boot loader's primary responsibility is to locate and load the operating system kernel into memory.

Once the kernel is loaded, it takes over control of the system. The kernel initializes the rest of the hardware, sets up memory management, and starts essential system processes and services. As these processes come online, the operating system begins to load its user interface or command-line environment, eventually presenting the user with a login prompt or the desktop. This entire orchestrated sequence ensures that the computer is ready to perform its intended functions.
