Käynnistyspysäytys is a Finnish term that translates to "start-stop" in English. It refers to a system commonly found in modern vehicles designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. The core function of a käynnistyspysäytys system is to automatically shut down the vehicle's engine when it is stationary, such as at a traffic light or in stop-and-go traffic, and then restart it automatically when the driver is ready to proceed.

This automatic engine shutdown and restart is typically triggered by a combination of sensors. When the vehicle comes to a complete stop and certain conditions are met, such as the driver's foot being on the brake pedal, the system deactivates the engine.
