Käynnistyspysäytys is a Finnish term that translates to "start-stop" in English. It refers to a system commonly found in modern vehicles designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. The core function of a käynnistyspysäytys system is to automatically shut down the vehicle's engine when it is stationary, such as at a traffic light or in stop-and-go traffic, and then restart it automatically when the driver is ready to proceed.

This automatic engine shutdown and restart is typically triggered by a combination of sensors. When the vehicle comes to a complete stop and certain conditions are met, such as the driver's foot being on the brake pedal, the system deactivates the engine. When the driver releases the brake pedal or engages the clutch in a manual transmission vehicle, the system quickly and smoothly restarts the engine.

The primary benefit of käynnistyspysäytys is reduced fuel consumption, as the engine is not idling unnecessarily.
