Kynsinauhasta, also known as fingernail fungus or onychomycosis, is a common fungal infection affecting the toenails and fingernails. It is caused by various types of fungi, most commonly dermatophytes. The infection typically starts as a small spot under the tip of the nail and can spread deeper, causing the nail to thicken, change color (often turning white, yellow, or brown), and become brittle or crumbly. In some cases, the nail may separate from the nail bed.

The fungi thrive in warm, moist environments, making it more common in toenails due to shoes and socks. Factors that increase the risk of developing kynsinauhasta include a history of fungal infections, excessive sweating, wearing tight-fitting shoes, damaged nails, and a weakened immune system. It can spread through direct contact with infected individuals or contaminated surfaces like locker room floors.

Diagnosis is usually made through a visual examination, although laboratory testing of nail clippings may be performed to confirm the presence of a fungal infection and identify the specific type of fungus. Treatment options vary and depend on the severity of the infection. These can include topical antifungal medications applied directly to the nail, oral antifungal medications, or in severe cases, nail removal. Prevention strategies include keeping nails clean and dry, wearing breathable footwear, and avoiding sharing nail clippers or files.
