Kylmätyöstö, or cold working, refers to a group of metal forming processes performed at or near room temperature. This contrasts with hot working, where the metal is heated above its recrystallization temperature. Cold working operations are typically carried out below the metal's recrystallization temperature, which results in significant strain hardening.

Common cold working processes include rolling, drawing, forging, stamping, and extrusion. These methods are used to shape and strengthen metal components. The benefits of cold working include improved surface finish, enhanced mechanical properties such as increased tensile strength and hardness, and tighter dimensional tolerances compared to hot working.

However, cold working also requires higher forces to deform the metal and can lead to residual stresses within the material. If the deformation is excessive, the metal may become brittle and prone to fracture. Annealing, a heat treatment process, is often employed after cold working to relieve these stresses and restore ductility if necessary.
