Kylkiluunväliset is a Finnish term referring to the intercostal muscles, which are located between the ribs. These muscles play a crucial role in respiration and provide structural support to the thoracic cage. There are three main layers of intercostal muscles: the external, internal, and innermost intercostal muscles.

The external intercostal muscles are the outermost layer and originate from the outer surface of the ribs. They primarily assist in inhalation by elevating the ribs and expanding the thoracic cavity. The internal intercostal muscles lie beneath the external ones and originate from the inner surface of the ribs. They are involved in forced exhalation by depressing the ribs and reducing the volume of the thoracic cavity. The innermost intercostal muscles are the deepest layer, lying just inside the internal intercostals. Their function is similar to that of the internal intercostals, aiding in exhalation.

These muscles are innervated by the intercostal nerves, which branch from the thoracic spinal nerves. Injuries to the intercostal muscles, such as strains or tears, can occur due to forceful coughing, sudden movements, or trauma. This can result in pain, tenderness, and difficulty breathing. Conditions like pleurisy, an inflammation of the lining of the lungs, can also cause pain in the intercostal spaces. Rehabilitation for intercostal muscle injuries typically involves rest, pain management, and gradually increasing exercises to restore strength and flexibility.
