This system is commonly used in shared ownership models, where multiple individuals collectively own a property but do not reside in it full-time.

The concept of kvartalsskifte emerged as a way to allow multiple families or individuals to enjoy the use of a single property without the need for full-time ownership. Each owner typically pays a portion of the property’s expenses, such as maintenance, taxes, and utilities, proportional to their usage. The rotation ensures that each participant gets an equal opportunity to use the property for a set period, often three months at a time.
