This provides an unprecedented level of security for sensitive data transmission.

Beyond QKD, quantum networks are envisioned to support other quantum technologies. This includes connecting quantum computers, enabling distributed quantum computing where multiple quantum processors can work together on complex problems. Such a network could also facilitate quantum sensing networks, where highly sensitive quantum sensors are distributed over a wide area, improving measurement capabilities for scientific research and practical applications.

Building and maintaining quantum networks presents significant technological challenges. These include the fragility of quantum states, which are susceptible to environmental noise and decoherence, and the difficulty of transmitting quantum information over long distances without loss or degradation. Current research focuses on developing advanced quantum repeaters, error correction techniques, and efficient quantum memory to overcome these obstacles and realize the full potential of quantum communication networks.
