Kvaliakäsite, often translated as "quale" or "qualia" in English, is a philosophical term referring to the subjective, qualitative properties of conscious experience. It represents the "what it's like" aspect of an experience, such as the redness of red, the pain of a headache, or the taste of chocolate. These subjective qualities are considered to be intrinsically personal and irreducible to purely physical or functional descriptions.

Philosophers debate the nature and existence of qualia. Some argue that qualia are fundamental and undeniable aspects of consciousness, providing a direct window into our subjective reality. Others, known as eliminativists or reductivists, contend that qualia are either illusory or can be fully explained by neurobiological processes and functional states. They suggest that the feeling of experience is simply how certain brain states represent themselves to us.

The "hard problem of consciousness," famously articulated by David Chalmers, highlights the difficulty of explaining how physical processes in the brain give rise to subjective qualia. While science can explain the functional and behavioral aspects of consciousness, explaining the qualitative feel of experience remains a significant challenge. Discussions around qualia often involve thought experiments, such as Mary's room, which explore whether knowing all the physical facts about a phenomenon is sufficient to know what it is like to experience it. The concept of kvaliakäsite is central to debates in philosophy of mind, consciousness studies, and artificial intelligence.
