Kuumennuskäsittelyt, often translated as heat treatments, are processes where a material, typically metal, is heated and cooled in a controlled manner to alter its physical and mechanical properties. These treatments are crucial for improving a material's strength, hardness, ductility, toughness, and wear resistance. The specific temperature, holding time, and cooling rate determine the resulting microstructure and thus the final properties.

Common types of heat treatments include annealing, which softens the material and improves its workability by relieving internal stresses and refining its grain structure. Normalizing is another process that refines the grain size and improves uniformity, making the material less brittle. Hardening, often achieved through quenching, involves heating the material to a specific temperature and then rapidly cooling it, usually in water or oil, to create a harder and stronger structure. Tempering is then often applied after hardening to reduce brittleness and increase toughness by reheating the material to a lower temperature for a specific time.

Other heat treatments include case hardening, which hardens only the surface layer of a part while keeping the core relatively soft, and precipitation hardening, used for certain alloys to increase their strength by forming fine precipitates within the material's matrix. The selection of a particular heat treatment depends on the material's composition, its intended application, and the desired final properties.
