Kuumasinkittyjen is the Finnish term for hot-dip galvanized items or for hot-dip galvanizing in general. Hot-dip galvanizing coats steel or iron by immersion in molten zinc, producing a multi-layer coating that protects the substrate from corrosion. The coating includes an iron-zinc alloy layer near the metal surface and a thicker outer zinc layer; the zinc provides sacrificial and barrier protection, delaying corrosion of the underlying steel.

The process typically involves surface cleaning, sometimes acid pickling and fluxing, immersion in molten zinc at roughly 450°C, followed by withdrawal and cooling. The coating thickness is described by zinc weight per unit area (g/m2) and varies with service conditions and standards. The main international standards for the process are ISO 1461 and EN 1461, which specify requirements for adhesion, thickness, appearance, and inspection.

Kuumasinkittyjen coatings are widely used on outdoor and structural steel components. Common applications include fencing, guardrails, bridges, pipelines, street furniture, construction hardware, and electrical enclosures. The coatings offer long service life with relatively low maintenance compared to untreated steel and can be repaired or re-applied to damaged areas.

Limitations include reduced effectiveness in highly aggressive environments and on complex geometries where complete coverage can be challenging without appropriate coating weight. Mechanical damage can expose the substrate, necessitating local repair or recoating. Surface preparation and coating quality are important for durability, and coatings should be selected to suit climate, exposure, and service life requirements.

From an environmental and lifecycle perspective, zinc is recyclable, and hot-dip galvanizing is considered cost-effective over the long term, though it involves energy use and handling of zinc-containing materials.
