Kuis, also known as quiz in English, is a form of game or assessment in which participants answer questions to test knowledge or to compete for points. In Indonesian usage, kuis is the standard term for both classroom exercises and entertainment formats such as quiz shows or online quizzes. A kuis can be conducted in writing or verbally, and formats vary from multiple-choice and true/false to short-answer or open-ended prompts. Some quizzes are timed and use scoring systems that reward accuracy, speed, or a combination of both.

The word kuis has been borrowed from English, but the etymology of the English word quiz is uncertain and debated. Some folk tales claim a specific invention, but linguistic consensus attributes the origin to historical usage in the 18th–19th centuries with no definitive single source. Regardless of origin, the concept spread globally and adapted to many media and educational settings, including schools, television, radio, and online platforms.

Quizzes are used for learning, assessment, and entertainment. Educational quizzes aim to reinforce memory and understanding, while game-show quizzes emphasize competition and showmanship. In modern contexts, digital platforms host large libraries of quizzes and use gamification elements such as points, badges, and leaderboards to encourage participation.
