Kudossyöpäkasvaimia, known in English as soft tissue sarcomas, are a diverse group of cancers that originate in the connective tissues of the body. These tissues include muscle, fat, cartilage, bone, blood vessels, and nerves. Unlike carcinomas, which arise from epithelial cells (like skin or organ linings), sarcomas develop in the mesenchyme, the embryonic tissue that forms these structural components.

The exact causes of most soft tissue sarcomas are unknown. However, certain factors can increase the risk. These include genetic conditions like neurofibromatosis, exposure to radiation therapy, and certain chemical exposures. Injuries or trauma to the soft tissues have not been definitively linked to sarcoma development, though they may sometimes draw attention to a pre-existing tumor.

Symptoms vary widely depending on the tumor's location, size, and type. A common sign is a painless lump or swelling that may grow over time. If the tumor presses on nerves or organs, it can cause pain, numbness, or functional impairment. In rarer cases, such as those involving internal organs, symptoms might be more generalized, like unexplained weight loss or fatigue.

Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination, imaging techniques such as MRI, CT scans, or ultrasound, and a biopsy. The biopsy is crucial for confirming the presence of cancer and determining the specific type of sarcoma, which guides treatment decisions. Treatment approaches often include surgery to remove the tumor, radiation therapy to kill cancer cells, and chemotherapy to treat cancer that has spread. The prognosis for soft tissue sarcomas depends heavily on the tumor's grade (how abnormal the cells look), stage (how far it has spread), and the patient's overall health.
