kreivi

Kreivi is the Finnish title for the noble rank of count, equivalent to the Swedish greve and the French comte. In Finnish usage, the feminine form is kreivitär. The term appears in historical sources from the period when Finland was part of the Kingdom of Sweden and later when it was the Grand Duchy of Finland under the Russian Empire. Counts traditionally formed part of the upper nobility and were often associated with large estates and seats within the estates of the realm; the exact rank and privileges varied over time and between states.

In the Finnish nobility, kreivit and their families belonged to the hereditary nobility (aatelisto). The creation of new kreivi titles largely stopped in the 18th and 19th centuries, and after Finland’s independence, noble privileges were abolished by law in 1919. Since then, the title has no legal status or privileges, though it remains of interest for genealogy, heraldry, and historical scholarship. Some historic kreivi families are still discussed in historical accounts and may appear in literature and heraldic materials.

Today, the use of kreivi is primarily historical or symbolic. The Finnish nobility as a legally privileged estate no longer exists, and there is no mechanism under Finnish law for creating new noble titles. The term is thus encountered mainly in discussions of history, genealogy, and heraldry, rather than as a contemporary social or political rank.
