The fundamental principle involves generating water vapor, often through boiling water, and then allowing this vapor to condense on cooler surfaces. As the water vapor transitions from a gaseous state to a liquid state, it releases a significant amount of latent heat. This released heat is then transferred to the surrounding environment, providing warmth.

The implementation of kosteuslämmitys can vary. In some conceptual designs, a closed loop system might be employed where steam is generated and directed through radiators or heat exchangers. As the steam condenses, the heat is dissipated, and the resulting water is returned to be re-vaporized.
