Korvetten are small warships designed for speed, maneuverability, and versatility. The term derives from the French corvette, historically used for fast, lightly armed sailing vessels that were smaller than frigates. In many navies, korvetten were intended for tasks such as convoy escort, coastal patrol, reconnaissance, and dispatches, offering a balance between range, endurance, and firepower without the size and cost of larger warships. In the age of sail, korvetten typically carried a modest number of guns and relied on speed to outmaneuver larger ships.
