Korvatulehdusta, medically known as otitis, refers to inflammation of the ear. It most commonly affects the middle ear, a condition called otitis media. This inflammation can be caused by bacterial or viral infections, often following a common cold or upper respiratory infection. Fluid can build up in the middle ear space, creating pressure and pain.

Symptoms of otitis media in children can include ear pain, fussiness, difficulty sleeping, and fever. Older children and adults may experience more localized earache, a feeling of fullness in the ear, and temporary hearing loss. Diagnosis typically involves a physical examination of the ear using an otoscope.

Treatment for otitis media varies depending on the cause and severity. In many cases, especially with viral infections, the condition resolves on its own with watchful waiting and pain management. Antibiotics may be prescribed for bacterial infections. For recurrent or persistent ear infections, or if there are complications, ear tubes may be recommended to help drain fluid and ventilate the middle ear. Prevention strategies include vaccinations like the pneumococcal vaccine and avoiding exposure to cigarette smoke.
