Kortikoszteroidkezelés, commonly known as corticosteroid therapy or steroid treatment, refers to the use of synthetic medications that mimic the effects of naturally occurring corticosteroids produced by the adrenal glands. These medications are potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive agents. They are widely prescribed to manage a broad spectrum of conditions characterized by inflammation or an overactive immune system.

The primary mechanism of action for corticosteroids involves reducing inflammation by inhibiting the production of inflammatory mediators. They also suppress the immune system, which can be beneficial in autoimmune diseases and in preventing organ transplant rejection. Corticosteroids are available in various forms, including oral tablets, inhaled sprays, topical creams and ointments, and injectable solutions. The route of administration depends on the condition being treated and the desired site of action.

Common conditions treated with corticosteroids include asthma, allergies, arthritis, lupus, inflammatory bowel disease, eczema, psoriasis, and certain cancers. While highly effective, corticosteroid therapy can also lead to a range of side effects, particularly with long-term or high-dose use. These can include weight gain, mood changes, increased susceptibility to infection, bone thinning (osteoporosis), elevated blood pressure, cataracts, and skin thinning. Therefore, treatment is typically initiated at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration necessary, and patients are closely monitored for adverse effects. Tapering off the medication is often required to prevent withdrawal symptoms.
