Korrodierte is the German adjective used to describe a material that has undergone corrosion. The word derives from the verb korrodieren, which in turn comes from the noun Korrosion and ultimately from the Latin corrodere “to gnaw away.” In practice, korrodiert is most commonly applied to metals, but it can describe any material attacked by chemical or electrochemical processes.

Corrosion is a chemical or electrochemical process in which a material loses matter due to its reaction with the surrounding environment. Moisture, oxygen, salts, acids and heat can accelerate the process. Galvanic corrosion occurs when two different metals are in electrical contact in an electrolyte; localized forms include pitting and crevice corrosion. Types range from uniform corrosion to more localized forms that create structural weaknesses.

Materials commonly described as korrodiert include iron and steel, aluminium and its alloys, copper and its alloys, as well as concrete structures where reinforcing steel has decayed. The effects of corrosion on such components can include reduced strength, increased roughness, loss of cross-section, leaks or failures, and higher maintenance costs.

Detection and assessment rely on visual inspection and material testing. Non-destructive methods, such as ultrasound, eddy current testing, radiography, and corrosion coupons, help quantify the extent of corrosion without damaging the component.

Prevention and mitigation strategies include protective coatings and paints, surface treatments, galvanization, alloy selection, corrosion inhibitors, and cathodic protection. Design measures that minimize crevices and moisture retention, along with regular inspections and moisture control, are also important.
