Koronki are decorative fabrics formed by threading yarns into openwork patterns that create motifs such as flowers, leaves, or geometric shapes. In Polish, koronki denotes lace in general, including both handmade and machine-made varieties.

Lace is produced by several techniques. Crochet lace (koronka szydełkowa) uses hooked yarn to form motifs; needle or bobbin lace involves intricate stitches worked on a framework; and tatting (frywolitka) joins small rings into borders. Modern koronki also appear in machine-made forms that imitate traditional handwork.

Common applications include trimming on clothing (collars, cuffs, edgings), veils, tablecloths, napkins, and curtains, as well as ecclesiastical vestments and decorative home textiles. The variety of patterns and fibers—from cotton and linen to silk and synthetics—allows durable or delicate lace for different uses.

Poland has a long lace-making tradition, with many regional styles and a robust community of artisans. Lace-making reached broader European popularity in the Renaissance, and Polish koronki became part of folk costumes, regional dress, and church textiles.

Care and preservation require gentle handling: hand washing or delicate cycles, mild detergents, and drying flat away from direct heat. Store in a cool, dry place, ideally between acid-free papers to reduce yellowing. Modern koronki continue to be produced for fashion and interior design.
