Kopsufibroos is a term used for a chronic interstitial lung disease characterized by progressive scarring of lung tissue, reducing the lungs' ability to transfer oxygen. The condition encompasses idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis as well as fibrosis related to known causes.

Common symptoms include progressive shortness of breath on exertion and a persistent dry cough. The disease may arise without a known cause (idiopathic) or be associated with exposure to environmental dusts, tobacco smoke, certain medications, radiation therapy, or autoimmune diseases.

Diagnosis relies on clinical evaluation, high-resolution computed tomography showing peripheral and basal-predominant reticular abnormalities, and pulmonary function testing that reveals a restrictive pattern. Sometimes biopsy or bronchoalveolar lavage is needed to exclude other diseases. In treatment, no cure exists for most forms. Antifibrotic drugs such as nintedanib or pirfenidone can slow progression in some patients. Supportive care includes oxygen therapy, pulmonary rehabilitation, vaccinations, and management of comorbidities. Lung transplant may be considered for eligible patients.

Prognosis varies; idiopathic cases often have a progressive course with substantial impact on quality of life, and median survival after diagnosis has historically been measured in a few years. The condition is more common in older adults and men, with rising recognition in many regions. Ongoing research aims to better understand mechanisms and develop more effective therapies.
