koorumise

Koorumise, also known as flying squirrels or simply kooru, are nocturnal, arboreal rodents found in various parts of the world, primarily in tropical and subtropical regions. The scientific name for the kooru animal is Pteromyini, which is a subfamily of squirrels that have developed the unique ability of gliding through the air. These rodents are found in East Asia, Australia and nearby islands and Southeast Asia.

Characterized by a membrane called a patagium that stretches from their wrists to their ankles, koorums are capable of making long-distance glides between trees, often to escape predators, traverse obstacles, or make migrations in their search for food or shelter. This remarkable feature allows them to cover a considerable amount of distance, leap up to one mile or more with the support of a single tree-to-tree jump.

Despite their name, flying squirrels do not actually fly. They do not have any lift-generating wings and power through the air. Koorums are primarily herbivorous and omnivorous with a diet consisting of fruits, seeds, leaves and occasionally insects or small vertebrates. The most commonly encountered species of koorum include the Indian giant flying squirrel and the Philippine flying lemur.
