Kontúrtérképek, also known as contour maps, are a type of thematic map designed to depict the three-dimensional shape of the Earth's surface on a two-dimensional plane. They achieve this by utilizing contour lines, which are curves that connect points of equal elevation above a reference level, typically sea level. Each contour line represents a specific altitude, and the interval between adjacent lines, known as the contour interval, is consistent across the map.

The spacing between contour lines provides crucial information about the steepness of the terrain. Closely spaced lines indicate a steep slope, while widely spaced lines suggest a gentle incline or relatively flat ground. Contour lines never intersect or cross each other, as a single point on the ground cannot have multiple elevations. They also tend to form closed loops, either on the map or extending beyond its boundaries, representing hills, mountains, or depressions.
