A kontrolliyksikkö, often translated as control unit, is a fundamental component within a computer's central processing unit (CPU). Its primary function is to direct and coordinate the operations of the entire processor and, by extension, the computer system. It acts as the conductor of an orchestra, ensuring that different parts of the CPU, such as the arithmetic logic unit (ALU) and registers, perform their tasks in the correct sequence and at the appropriate times.

The control unit fetches instructions from memory, decodes them to understand what action is required, and then generates control signals to execute those instructions. These signals are sent to various other components, including the ALU, memory, and input/output devices, to tell them what to do and when to do it. For example, if an instruction is to add two numbers, the control unit will signal the ALU to perform the addition and then direct where the result should be stored.

The design of a control unit can be implemented in two main ways: hardwired or microprogrammed. A hardwired control unit uses logic gates and circuits to perform its functions, offering high speed but limited flexibility. A microprogrammed control unit uses a special memory (control store) to hold sequences of microinstructions that define the execution of each machine instruction, providing greater flexibility but potentially slower performance. Regardless of its implementation, the control unit is essential for the sequential execution of program instructions that allows a computer to perform its intended functions.
