It is a technical specification used to describe the difference between the brightest white and the darkest black that a display device, such as a monitor, television, or projector, can produce. A higher contrast ratio generally indicates a better quality image, as it allows for more subtle variations in shade and detail to be visible.

The contrast ratio is typically expressed as a numerical value, for example, 1000:1. This means that the brightest white the display can show is 1000 times brighter than the darkest black it can show. Manufacturers often distinguish between static contrast ratio and dynamic contrast ratio. Static contrast ratio measures the difference in brightness between black and white at a single point in time.
