Kontrastiherkkyys, sometimes referred to as contrast sensitivity, is a measure of a person's ability to discern differences in brightness or lightness between adjacent areas. It is a fundamental aspect of visual perception and plays a crucial role in everyday activities such as reading, driving, and recognizing faces. Individuals with higher contrast sensitivity can perceive subtle differences in light intensity, making it easier to distinguish objects from their backgrounds, especially in low light conditions or when there is a lack of sharp detail.

Several factors can influence contrast sensitivity. Age is a common factor, as contrast sensitivity tends to decline with age, often due to changes in the lens of the eye or the visual pathways in the brain. Certain eye conditions, such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration, can also significantly impair contrast sensitivity. Neurological disorders that affect the visual cortex can also lead to reduced contrast sensitivity. Environmental factors, like glare or poor lighting, can also temporarily reduce one's ability to perceive contrast.

Assessing contrast sensitivity is often done using specialized charts that present patterns of varying contrast levels. Unlike standard visual acuity tests, which measure the ability to see fine details at high contrast, contrast sensitivity tests evaluate the ability to detect coarser details at lower contrast levels. This provides a more comprehensive understanding of an individual's visual function. Impaired contrast sensitivity can lead to difficulties in specific visual tasks and may require interventions like optimizing lighting, using anti-glare coatings, or addressing underlying eye conditions.
