They are designed to solve problems by allowing multiple agents to bid on tasks and negotiate contracts to perform them. This approach is inspired by economic markets and aims to achieve efficient task allocation in decentralized environments.

The core idea behind kontraktnettverk is that agents, which can be individual software entities or even human users, possess certain resources or capabilities. When a problem arises that requires a set of tasks to be completed, a central manager or a distributed mechanism announces these tasks. Agents then evaluate their ability to perform these tasks and submit bids, essentially offering to complete a task for a certain price or resource cost.

A key feature of kontraktnettverk is the auction mechanism. Agents bid on tasks, and the manager (or the network itself) selects the winning bid based on predefined criteria, often the lowest bid or a combination of bid price and agent capability. This process continues until all tasks are assigned to agents.
