It refers to a compositional technique where a musical phrase or motif is extended or developed through various means, often by repeating, varying, or transforming its elements. This method is commonly found in Baroque music, particularly in the works of composers like Johann Sebastian Bach, where it plays a significant role in creating continuity and cohesion within a piece.

The technique involves maintaining a sense of forward motion by linking ideas together seamlessly. In contrapuntal writing, such as fugues or canons, kontinuace ensures that the subject or theme remains recognizable while being integrated into the surrounding music. This can be achieved through techniques like sequence, inversion, or stretto, where the motif is repeated at different pitches, mirrored, or overlapped with itself.

Kontinuace is closely related to the concept of *continuo*, the Baroque practice of providing harmonic support through a bass line and chordal accompaniment.
