The Kontinentalsystemet, often translated as the Continental System or Continental Blockade, was a large-scale embargo on British trade announced by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806. The primary goal was to cripple the British economy by preventing any European nation under French influence from trading with Great Britain. Napoleon believed this economic pressure would force Britain to negotiate peace and acknowledge French dominance in Europe.

The system was implemented through a series of decrees, notably the Berlin Decree of 1806 and the Milan Decree of 1807. These decrees forbade the import of British goods into French-controlled territories and mandated the seizure of British merchandise. Enforcement proved challenging, as many European nations were reluctant to comply due to their reliance on British trade and naval power. Smuggling became rampant, and the economic hardship caused by the blockade also fueled resentment against French rule across the continent.

The Kontinentalsystemet had significant repercussions. It contributed to the outbreak of the War of 1812 between the United States and Britain, as American trade was also affected. Furthermore, the continued efforts to enforce the blockade strained France's relations with allies like Russia, ultimately playing a role in Napoleon's decision to invade Russia in 1812. The system was gradually abandoned as French power waned, and it officially ended with Napoleon's downfall in 1814.
