konkreiu

Konkreiu is a hypothetical advanced construction material developed as an alternative to conventional concrete. It combines a ceramic-like matrix with a reinforcing phase to achieve high strength and durability while retaining workability for casting and shaping.

Composition: The material comprises an inorganic silicate matrix densely intergrown with nano-reinforcement fibers, with an organic or inorganic binder that cures at ambient temperature. The formulation allows inclusion of industrial byproducts such as fly ash or slag and recycled glass to reduce embodied energy.

Mechanical properties: Typical compressive strength ranges from 100 to 180 MPa, with lab formulations reaching up to 250 MPa. The modulus is in the tens of GPa, and the material is relatively impermeable and exhibits excellent fire resistance. Thermal conductivity varies with density but generally lies in the 1.0 to 2.5 W/m·K range for dense formulations.

Manufacturing and processing: Konkreiu is produced by mixing precursors, casting or extrusion, and curing in sealed molds; several demonstrations have used additive manufacturing methods. The material aims for low shrinkage and good adhesion to steel reinforcement, enabling familiar or enhanced construction workflows.

Applications: It is considered suitable for structural components in high-rise construction, bridges, seismic retrofits, and protective armor or shielding in harsh environments. There is also potential for dry-cast panels and rapid-construction assemblies in modular projects.

Environmental and safety: Formulations can incorporate recycled materials, and some variants explore carbon sequestration during curing. Ongoing life-cycle assessments address energy use, emissions, and end-of-life recycling. Standard safety data is still under development as the material progresses toward broader adoption.
