Konjunktit is the inflammation or infection of the conjunctiva, the thin transparent membrane that lines the inner surface of the eyelids and covers the white part of the eyeball. It is commonly known as "pink eye."

There are several causes of konjunktit. Infectious konjunktit can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi. Viral konjunktit is often associated with the common cold and is highly contagious. Bacterial konjunktit, often caused by Staphylococcus or Streptococcus bacteria, can result in a thick, pus-like discharge. Allergic konjunktit is a non-infectious type triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. Irritant konjunktit can be caused by exposure to smoke, chemicals, or foreign bodies in the eye.

Symptoms of konjunktit typically include redness or pinkness of the eye, itching, burning, a gritty sensation, discharge (which can be watery, mucus-like, or pus-like), and sometimes blurred vision. In cases of allergic konjunktit, symptoms are often bilateral and accompanied by other allergy symptoms like sneezing or a runny nose.

Diagnosis is usually made based on the patient's medical history and a physical examination of the eye. Sometimes, a sample of the discharge may be collected for laboratory testing to identify the specific cause.

Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Viral konjunktit often resolves on its own and may be managed with supportive care like artificial tears. Bacterial konjunktit is treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointments. Allergic konjunktit is managed by avoiding allergens and using antihistamine eye drops or oral medications. Irritant konjunktit requires removing the irritant and may involve artificial tears. Good hygiene practices, such as frequent hand washing and avoiding touching the eyes, are crucial in preventing the spread of infectious konjunktit.
