These weapons are characterized by their high rate of fire, making them effective for suppressing enemy positions, providing covering fire, and engaging multiple targets.

Machine guns are categorized by their size and role. Light machine guns are generally man-portable and can be fired from the shoulder or bipod. Medium machine guns are heavier, often mounted on tripods or vehicles, offering a balance between firepower and mobility. Heavy machine guns are the largest and most powerful, typically mounted on vehicles, aircraft, or fixed emplacements, designed for long-range engagement and anti-materiel roles.
