konehallit

Konehallit are large interior spaces designed to house mechanical equipment in industrial settings. The term is Finnish, formed from kone (machine) and halli (hall). It refers to buildings or sections within buildings where heavy machinery is installed and maintained, rather than offices or living quarters. In industrial complexes, several konehallit may exist side by side to organize different systems or production steps.

Typical features of a konehalli include a wide, unobstructed floor area, reinforced foundations and floors able to bear heavy loads, overhead or gantry cranes, and integrated utility services such as electrical, plumbing and ventilation networks. The interior is arranged to allow technicians to access equipment for installation, inspection and repair, with clearances and corridors planned for safe operation and maintenance of large machines such as turbines, generators or presses.

Historically, konehallit were central to the operation of many industrial facilities in Finland and other countries. Some have become heritage sites or have been repurposed as museums, workshops, or event spaces while preserving their structural characteristics. Modern facilities may still use the term to describe dedicated halls for heavy machinery within factories, power stations, or shipyards.
