Kompressionsbandage is a medical device used to apply controlled compression to a limb, most often the leg. By applying circumferential pressure, these bandages help support superficial and deep venous return, reduce venous hypertension, and limit edema arising from chronic venous insufficiency, lymphedema, or recent injury.

Bandages are typically elastic or cohesive and may be long-stretch (high elasticity) or short-stretch (low elasticity). Elastic bands provide a relatively constant resting pressure and gain pressure with muscle activity, while short-stretch bands generate higher working pressure during movement. The pressure is usually greatest at the ankle and decreases upward.

Indications include chronic venous insufficiency with edema, venous ulcers, lymphedema, swelling after injury, and some postoperative care to reduce thrombosis risk. They may also be used in sports medicine to limit swelling after acute injuries. The choice of bandage depends on target pressure, limb size, and tolerance.

Application and safety: Correct fitting is essential to avoid restricting circulation. Apply with the leg elevated, starting at the toes and working upward. A trained professional or caregiver should fit high-compression bandages; improper application can cause numbness, coldness, or color change. Contraindications include significant arterial insufficiency and acute infections or wounds with uncertain cause.

Care and maintenance: Inspect skin regularly, keep the bandage clean and dry, and replace worn or irritated material. Some bandages are reusable; others are single-use. Follow prescribed wear schedules and seek medical advice if symptoms worsen or if there is persistent pain, numbness, or pale skin.
