Akompostkan (often referred to as a compost bin) is a container designed to facilitate the aerobic decomposition of organic waste. It is used to convert kitchen scraps and yard debris into nutrient-rich compost, reducing the amount of waste sent to landfills and providing a soil amendment for gardens and landscapes.

A kompostkan works by providing a controlled environment where microbes break down plant and food waste. Materials are typically balanced between greens (nitrogen-rich) and browns (carbon-rich), aiming for a carbon-to-nitrogen ratio around 25–30:1. The pile should be kept moist, like a wrung-out sponge, and aerated through vents, drainage, or regular turning. Temperature and moisture influence the rate of decomposition, with hot composting producing faster results but not always necessary.

Common types include stationary bins made of plastic, wood, or metal; tumbling or rotating drums for easier turning; and simple wire enclosures. Some kitchen-specific models emphasize odor control or compact design. Bokashi is a related but different anaerobic method using a specialized fermenter and inoculated bran, not a traditional aerobic kompostkan.

Use and maintenance guidelines emphasize layering greens and browns, chopping material for faster decomposition, and keeping the lid closed to deter pests. Avoid adding meat, dairy, fats, or diseased plant material in typical garden bins. Regular turning or aeration, proper moisture, and allowing the compost to mature before use help ensure a safe, productive finished product.
