Komedo, often referred to as blackheads or whiteheads, are a common form of acne. They occur when a hair follicle becomes clogged with sebum (oil) and dead skin cells. If the pore remains open to the air, the trapped sebum and skin cells oxidize and turn black, creating a blackhead. If the pore becomes completely blocked, a whitehead forms, which appears as a small, white or flesh-colored bump.

Comedones are not caused by dirt, despite the common misconception that blackheads are a result of unclean skin. They are a result of the natural processes occurring within the skin's pores. Factors such as hormonal changes, particularly during puberty, menstruation, and pregnancy, can increase sebum production, making comedones more likely. Genetics and certain medications can also play a role.

While comedones are generally not painful or inflamed, they can be a precursor to more severe acne lesions like papules and pustules. Treatment for comedones often involves topical medications such as retinoids, salicylic acid, or benzoyl peroxide, which help to unclog pores and reduce oil production. Gentle cleansing and exfoliation can also be beneficial. In some cases, professional extraction by a dermatologist may be recommended.
