kolumnás

Kolumnás is a term originating from Central and Eastern Europe, particularly associated with the historical period of serfdom or feudalism. It refers to a peasant who held a parcel of land (a "kolumna") from a lord, often in exchange for labor or rent. The size and specific terms of the landholding could vary significantly depending on the region and the lord's decree.

These peasants, or kolumnás, occupied a social stratum above landless laborers but below freeholders. They were typically obligated to perform a certain number of days of work on the lord's demesne each week and to pay dues in kind, such as grain, livestock, or other produce. While they had a right to cultivate their assigned land for their own subsistence, their economic and personal freedoms were often limited by the lord's authority.

The system of kolumnás played a significant role in the agricultural economy of many European countries for centuries. It provided a stable, albeit dependent, labor force for landowners and ensured the cultivation of land. As economic and social structures evolved, particularly with the abolition of serfdom in many parts of Europe during the 18th and 19th centuries, the status of the kolumnás gradually changed, leading to different forms of land tenure and peasant rights.
