It is a common external parasite found worldwide and is particularly prevalent in environments where dogs live in close proximity. This small, wingless insect measures approximately 1-2 millimeters in length and has a flattened, brown body with three pairs of legs.

The life cycle of kolmenvarpaamatilli involves three stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Adult females lay eggs, called nits, which are attached to the dog's hair shafts, often near the base. These nits hatch into nymphs, which resemble smaller versions of adult lice. Nymphs then molt several times before reaching adulthood. The entire life cycle can be completed in about three to four weeks under favorable conditions.

Kolmenvarpaamatilli feeds on skin debris and secretions, as well as hair. While they do not typically cause severe health problems on their own, their presence can lead to itching, scratching, and skin irritation. In some cases, heavy infestations can result in hair loss, secondary bacterial infections, and anemia, especially in young or debilitated animals. Furthermore, kolmenvarpaamatilli can act as a vector for certain tapeworms, specifically Dipylidium caninum, which dogs can contract by ingesting infected lice during grooming.

Diagnosis is usually made by visual examination of the dog's coat, looking for adult lice, nymphs, or nits. Treatment involves the use of veterinary-approved insecticides in the form of shampoos, dips, sprays, or spot-on treatments. It is crucial to treat all affected animals in a household and to thoroughly clean bedding and grooming equipment to prevent re-infestation.
