The process of converting between color spaces is known as color transformation or gamut mapping. During this process, the image data is adjusted to fit within the gamut, or color range, of the target color space. For example, if an image created in a wide-gamut color space like ProPhoto RGB is intended for display on a standard web browser that typically uses sRGB, then sRGB becomes the target color space. The software performing the conversion will attempt to render the colors as accurately as possible within the limitations of the sRGB color space, potentially clipping or compressing colors that fall outside its range.
