koeremaja

Koeremaja is the Estonian term for a doghouse—a small shelter for a dog, typically placed outdoors or in a sheltered area. The word combines koer meaning "dog" and maja meaning "house."

Construction: Most koeremajad are made of wood, though plastic or metal variants exist. A common design includes a rectangular box with a sloped roof and an elevated floor to keep out moisture. The entrance is sized for the dog; weatherproofing, insulation, and proper drainage are important in climates with cold winters.

Usage: The koeremaja provides protection from wind, rain, and snow when the dog is outside. It is used in family yards, on farms, and in kennel settings. It can be part of a dog run or fenced area.

Welfare and maintenance: The shelter should be large enough for the dog to stand, turn around, and lie comfortably. Bedding should be dry and replaced regularly; ventilation is important to prevent dampness. In cold climates, insulating materials and raised floors help reduce heat loss. Regular cleaning and ensuring secure placement against predators or drafts are recommended.
