The inner pipe typically carries a working fluid, which evaporates and condenses to transport heat. The outer pipe serves as a casing and may contain another fluid or be used for structural purposes.

The principle of operation relies on the phase change of the working fluid. Heat is applied to one end of the inner pipe, causing the fluid to vaporize. This vapor then travels along the inner pipe to a cooler section, where it condenses back into a liquid, releasing the absorbed heat. The condensed liquid then returns to the hotter end, often through capillary action in a wick structure or by gravity, completing the cycle.
