Koagulabilität refers to the tendency of a substance, particularly a fluid, to coagulate or clot. In the context of blood, koagulabilität, often referred to as blood coagulation or hemostasis, is a critical physiological process that prevents excessive bleeding when a blood vessel is injured. It involves a complex cascade of biochemical reactions, involving numerous clotting factors, platelets, and other components, ultimately leading to the formation of a fibrin clot. This clot seals the damaged vessel and allows for tissue repair.

The process of blood coagulation can be initiated by two main pathways: the intrinsic pathway and the extrinsic pathway, both of which converge to activate factor X. Activated factor X then initiates the common pathway, leading to the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin. Thrombin, in turn, catalyzes the conversion of fibrinogen into fibrin, which forms a meshwork that traps blood cells and platelets, thus forming the clot.

Disruptions in koagulabilität can lead to significant health issues. A reduced ability to coagulate, known as coagulopathy, can result in prolonged bleeding, easy bruising, and potentially life-threatening hemorrhages. Conditions like hemophilia are examples of inherited disorders affecting blood clotting. Conversely, an excessively high koagulabilität, or hypercoagulability, can lead to the formation of unwanted blood clots, or thrombosis, which can block blood vessels and cause conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, and stroke. Various medical conditions, genetic predispositions, and certain medications can contribute to hypercoagulable states. Medical professionals assess koagulabilität through various laboratory tests to diagnose and manage bleeding or clotting disorders.
