Knighting is a ceremony by which a person is formally admitted into the rank of knighthood. Historically, this was a military honor, often bestowed upon warriors for bravery or distinguished service. The exact origins are debated, but the practice became widespread in medieval Europe.

The most recognizable part of the knighting ceremony is the accolade, where the sovereign or appointed official touches the recipient on the shoulder with the flat of a sword, sometimes on both shoulders. Other elements of the ceremony could include the presentation of a sword, spurs, and a banner, symbolizing their new status and responsibilities.
