Knighthoods are a form of honor conferred by a monarch or head of state to individuals for service, achievement, or merit. The term derives from Old English cniht, meaning “servant” or “page,” but by the 12th century it had come to designate a mounted warrior and member of a military order.

Historically, knights were a military caste in medieval Europe, bound by a code of conduct—often described as chivalry—encompassing courage, loyalty, protection of the weak, and defense of the church. Knights could be granted lands and privileges, and there developed various orders of knighthood with elaborate ceremonies and insignia.

In contemporary practice, knighthoods are typically honorary distinctions awarded within a country’s honors system. They may recognize achievements in public service, arts, science, business, or philanthropy, for both civilians and military personnel. In many jurisdictions a knight or dame is styled Sir or Dame and may be eligible for post-nominal letters corresponding to the awarding order. The bestowal is usually by a sovereign or head of state; some orders confer the right to use the title for life only, while a few baronetcies are hereditary and grant the title Sir to descendants.

Different countries have distinct systems. The United Kingdom, for example, uses orders such as the Order of the Bath, the Order of the British Empire, and the Order of St Michael and St George; recipients may be invested at a ceremony and wear insignia. Other nations maintain their own chivalric or honorary orders, some of which echo medieval motifs while serving modern civic aims.

Overall, knighthoods today function more as symbolic recognition of merit than as a formal rank of social hierarchy, though historic associations with nobility persist in popular understanding.
